How can you help?
Your donation will buy instruments and supplies for future projects and provide travel stipends to young ophthalmologists interested in helping the medically underserved.
The Fiat Lux Foundation was founded in 2009 by Dr. Thomas Tayeri with the goal of improving the lives of people with visual impairment, particularly those people with limited access to modern medical care.
Cataract Surgery: A Fifteen Minute Operation That Can Change a Life
Cataract surgery can transform people who were previously blind into seeing, productive members of society. It is a shocking fact that four out of five people with cataracts worldwide die before having the simple operation that can restore their sight.
Forty-five percent of those afflicted with cataracts are under the age of 65. Therefore, many people who have cataract surgery can return to work and contribute to their families’ financial wellbeing. Furthermore, family members who were previously thrust into the role of caretaker are freed up to do more productive work. Cataract surgery allows people to see their loved ones for the first time in years, in some cases for the first time ever. Cataract surgery can quite literally be a life saving event
Glaucoma Surgery Can Prevent Total Blindness
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, accounting for over seven million cases of bilateral blindness. One barrier to effective treatment of glaucoma is that, in the absence of regular eye exams, the disease can be difficult to diagnose. Many patients from underserved areas are not diagnosed until one eye is already blind. In these patients, glaucoma surgery can be the difference between retaining sight in the second eye and complete blindness.
A Global Concern
Today there are approximately 1.5 million people who are legally blind in the United States. Worldwide, it is estimated that there are over 50 million blind individuals, 80% of whom have reversible blindness that can be cured with cataract surgery.
